AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
1146 PM PDT Fri May 30 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Hot conditions will peak again Saturday afternoon with
gusty winds along shore by Sunday afternoon. Generally warm and dry
conditions will continue through the start of June.

KEY MESSAGES:

-Hot conditions with highs 95 to potentially 100 across the
interior and moderate Heat Risk for Saturday.

-Strong gusty winds near shore Sunday and Monday afternoon.

-Very slight chance (10%) of isolated dry thunderstorms over high
 terrain on Sunday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A strong but narrow ridge of high pressure
continues through Saturday with hot high temperatures, but cooler
than Friday by 2 to 4 degrees. Strong warming is expected again with
most interior highs spiking into the mid 80s to 90s by Saturday
afternoon. Some very isolated highs to 100 are possible by
Saturday afternoon (~30% chance) mostly in extreme southern Lake
County. Given the short nature of the event, the overall heat risk
is moderate. Marine influence and a strong sea breeze have kept
the immediate coast much cooler with marine air and fog extending
as high as around 1000 feet in elevation.

High pressure will gradually eject south and east with a robust mid
level trough stalling over the eastern Pacific by Sunday. This will
setup a very strong pressure gradient along shore just over the
coastal waters. The gradient will generate very strong north winds
throughout the waters but also in exposed areas along the coast.
Exposed ridges like in the King Range and Klamath Mountains in Del
Norte could see gusts as high as 50 mph, though stable marine air
will generally limit gusts at lower elevations. Still, gusts
around 40 mph are most likely at low elevations during the
afternoon. There remains some slight potential (30%) for marginal
wind advisory conditions along the coast with gusts over 45 mph at
low elevations. The risk is greatest (60%) on headlands around
Crescent City.

The trough over the Pacific will weaken and move inland by the end
of the weekend and into early next week. As the trough moves inland,
there is some slight potential for isolated thunderstorms over the
interior Sunday or Monday afternoon. The overall chance is currently
low (10%) with lack of moisture being the main issue. Moisture
transport will highly depend on the path of a possible cutoff low
along the coast which remains very uncertain. Any storms that do
form; however, will be dry and may pose a fire weather concern.
Wind along shore will also gradually decrease after Monday, though
some moderate afternoon gusts remain most likely through mid
week. Long range ensembles show generally high confidence in warm,
dry conditions continuing through the first week of June. /JHW

&&

.AVIATION...IFR and LIFR ceilings with a 20-30% chance for 1SM or
less in fog is expected early Saturday morning at coastal forecast
terminals (ACV and CEC). Ceilings at coastal terminals are forecast
to lift to MVFR through the day on Saturday as gusty northerlies
increase through the day and into the evening hours. These stronger
northerlies will likely result in marginal low level speed shear for
coastal terminals and perhaps low level turbulence. Occasional MVFR
cigs and perhaps IFR ceilings will be possible again at coastal
terminals with stronger northerlies by the evening. Otherwise, VFR
is expected for much of the interior except for early morning low
clouds and fog in North Coast river valleys and Eel delta. DB

&&

.MARINE...An exceptionally strong north wind event is anticipated
this weekend into early next week. Extremely large seas (20ft or
more) and gusts to 45-55 kt are highly probable (80-100% chance).
Mariners should remain in port and alter plans until calmer
conditions develop. Strong winds and large waves could capsize or
damage vessels. Synoptically, a 1038mb high pressure center over the
NE Pacific will build this weekend and interact with a deepening low
pressure system over the California interior. A very tight pressure
gradient between the high and low is forecast to develop over the
waters. Gale and storm force winds will increase both in coverage
and duration through this weekend. Initially, gales or storm force
winds are expected south of Cape Mendo Saturday afternoon and then
expand north of Cape Mendocino Saturday night. These strong north
winds will propel seas to 8 to 10 ft during the day on Saturday, and
then to 15 to 20 ft by midday Sunday. Seas are forecast to continue
to build Sunday night into Monday morning, reaching 22-25 feet, as
sustained northerly winds continue around 35-45 kt with gusts to 55
kt. Full gales with storm force gusts are forecast to continue
Monday and Tuesday, especially in the outer waters. Strong gales
will generate steep northerly waves that will propagate into the
inner waters into early next week. Gales are probable for much of
next week, once again in the outer waters and downwind of Pt St
George and Cape Mendocino as strong high pressure remains anchored
offshore and thermally induces low pressure continues over the
northern California interior. DB
