AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
1102 PM PDT Wed Jul 30 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Chance of thunderstorms is forecast for the interior
of Northwest California through at least Friday, with additional
chances through the weekend. Storms may produce strong and gusty
outflow winds, heavy rain and hail.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Scattered to numerous thunderstorms developed today
over Trinity County. There was instances of confirmed heavy
rainfall from reports and gauge observations. There was also
abundant lightning over Trinity County. Several storms reached
severe criteria with confirmed 1 inch hail. The activity quickly
lessened going into the evening. Mid level moisture and
instability parameters will be a little lower on Thursday, but
still somewhat comparable. A storm or two reaching severe criteria
is not out of the question with some scattered overall storm
coverage, but overall activity should be less than was achieved on
Wednesday. Held off on a Fire Weather Watch due to these reasons
and in part from the observed heavy rainfall today.

Friday will also feature another round of thunderstorms, confined
to mostly the northern Trinity mountains. Potential for thunderstorms
should decrease on Saturday as 500mb heights build and drier
westerly flow spreads across the area. A shorter wavelength
trough will approach on Sunday bringing yet another round of
possible showers and interior thunderstorms. Otherwise, temps will
remain near seasonal averages through the weekend. Incoming
trough on Sunday will likely induce stronger westerly to northwest
winds for our typically dry and windy areas; Lake, southern
Mendocino and eastern Trinity. These enhanced breezes may last
into Monday.

Interior temperatures will likely begin to warm up by mid next
week. How warm remains uncertain. 500mb heights pump up to 588DM
or more and suspect some of the more typical valley hot spots will
reach or exceed 100F. Models continue to show upstream troughs in
westerly flow busting down the ridge. These upstream troughs may
mitigate the threat for another long duration heat wave.

&&

.AVIATION...6Z TAFs...Broad troughing with embedded shortwave
disturbances are maintaining a deep marine layer. This will
continue to greatly reduce the chances for LIFR and fog. MVFR to
IFR ceilings are forecast under this setup, with MVFR better
favored. The low level inversion is showing some signs of
weakening. This will allow for a period of clearing from the coast
with daytime warming. Light westerly winds may bring TEMPO
coverage, but ceilings height should remain mostly MVFR to IFR as
long as the layer can remain this deep. Soundings show further
deepening likely under this continued pattern. Isolated to
scattered thunderstorms will develop once again in mostly Trinity
County Thursday afternoon. A couple storms may become strong and
capable of wet microbursts and 1 inch hail. JJW

&&

.MARINE...A low pressure center sitting off the coast of
British Columbia is disrupting our pressure surface gradient leading
to consistent fresh to strong breezes in the outer waters. Nearshore
winds will be dominated by daytime northerlies with southerly
reversals expected overnight, especially north of Cape Mendocino.
The sea state will be dominated by wind waves of 5-7 feet. The
winds and sea conditions in the southern waters warrant a small
craft advisory through the daylight hours Friday. This hazard area
will also include areas where localized gales force gusts
downwind of Cape Mendocino in the southern outer waters are high
likely (~70- 90%) during the daylight hours.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...The red flag warning for abundant lightning for
Wednesday verified well. Storms produced a combination of heavy
rain, gusty outflow winds and verified 1" hail from a report. The
mostly wet thunderstorm activity is forecast to continue on
Thursday, with a more northward and eastward shift. Once again,
the greatest chances will be over the Shasta-T in zone 283 and
perhaps along the periphery of NE Humboldt and eastern Del Norte.
Mid level moisture and instability parameters will be a little
lower on Thursday, but still somewhat comparable. A storm or two
reaching severe criteria is not out of the question with some
scattered coverage, but overall activity should be less than was
achieved on Wednesday. Held off on Fire Weather Watch due to these
reasons and in part from the observed heavy rainfall today.
Friday will also feature another round of thunderstorms, confined
to mostly the northern Trinity mountains. Potential for
thunderstorms should decrease on Saturday as 500mb heights build
and drier westerly flow spread across the area. A shorter
wavelength trough will approach on Sunday or Sunday night bringing
yet another round of possible showers and interior thunderstorms.
Otherwise, temps will remain near seasonal averages through the
weekend. Incoming trough on Sunday will likely induce stronger
westerly to northwest winds for our typically dry and windy areas;
Lake, southern Mendocino and eastern Trinity.
